Katia Bulbenko works at the intersection of painting and sculpture. She creates mixed media fiber assemblages using painted canvas and silk, printed fabric of her own design, beads, wire, thread, and other materials that bring her joy. In creating these objects, Katia draws on her experiences as a printmaker and textile designer. Her influences are organic forms in nature, especially objects that have been transformed and worn by erosion, like shells and rocks, together with a burgeoning, pulsing sense of universal life. These abstract constructions are experiments with color, form, texture, composition and layering; they are microcosms which become their own realms, giving energy and imagined story to lost fragments. Katia received the Excellence in Fiber Award in her first time exhibiting at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show.
